Contact sheet

This sheet is used for picking out a few good photos out of the majority for example if I was at a wedding I would take about 2000 thousand images and then pick the top 20. However for my task i will need to have 40 test shots, so i would need 4 contact sheets with ten images each. Also 20 of these shot have to be done at home.

this is what a contact sheet is i did the one on the right at college and the one on  the left is the one i did at home these are 18 out of the 40 shots i did. To actually make a contact sheet easily we used Photoshop and set the setting to the correct specification.

This is the first stage in creating my film poster for my first of the four images. first i changed the image into a black and white image and changed the different colours. then i changed exposure to add more dark shadows.

Evalueation

       In this assignment we learnt about the Film Noir genre. So we learnt that it was created at the end of World War 2 and the start of the Prohibition because of the sudden shift between the american economy being driven by war back to the original way(Peace Time), so the film directors had to make do with the lack of manpower and equipment such as; Actors, Extras and Technicians.Since most of the males went off to fight in the war so not only with a distinct lack off new actors, there was a lack of new lights so if one breaks it would irreplaceable so the directors relied on a heavy amount of shadows.

       

      In film noir the clothing used are trench coat and clothing you would use when eating out in a fine dining restaurant such as; dresses, suits and high quality shoes etc. The locations they would usually use would be; dark alley ways, speak eases and apartment etc. This was because i was the most common place for plot development to take place.       

          In my research of film noir ideas I saw a poster for the 'Third Man' this got me thinking of the possibility of using the college building for a backdrop for the image another image that inspired me was the poster for 'Spectre' this is a James Bond film were it has the main actor in front of a wall so I could convey a strong message with just a single subject of interest.   

·    Within film noir there are three main lighting technique these are three point lighting, Chiaroscuro and Couloirs.

      

        Three Point Lighting: This is mainly made by using three different lights even though you can use more, it really depends on the director but this is the basic set up because you have the key light this is for filling in most of the face, then the back light is for the background and the fill light is a little bit more dim than the key light but it is for filling in any shadows left by the key light 

      Chiaroscuro: this technique emphasizes the shadows with a combination of harsh lighting and soft shadowing, this technique was developed mainly for painting so this is the first appearance of this genre     

        

      Couloirs: Couloirs or another phrase is Cookies, this is using a cut out on the lights to show a for example a Venetian blind.

      My ideas are to have a classmate to be an actor in my photo shoot and so i took at least 10 images of the entrance behind college building so I had the main actor stand on top of the spot lights so that i can be my key light because the natural was good enough to be both my back and fill light, then for the two images I took at home was a product shoot and a location shoot my first shoot was the product shoot so i brought in a glass, hat and an empty bottle of vodka and i used a three point lighting system for it and i also used a seamless background made out of a piece of black cardboard. My next was the location i had my farther be the actor so i had him do different poses that worked within the film noir genre.    

During this project we had to think of the time on when to take images so i deiced on taking images during the morning until midday so the exact time would be around 10 o'clock and then Finish at 12 the reason i deiced on this was because i had check a week before the actual shoot with the weather app on my phone so as the day progressed it would get more cloudy so during morning I took the different images in the tunnel in the morning so there is enough natural light to manipulate in photo shop as shown in the first of the two contact sheets. The second contact sheet underneath the first one was already edited by me since we also need to take images during our free time. these image was taken during the week break we got after we had already researched the basic knowledge of film noir, for this i had to take in my surroundings to find a suitable place for a photo shoot for example for the two product product shots i had to create a seamless background with two black pieces of card while the others are location shots. Luckily for me i had access to both of my first choices for the model were available and all of the props that i had brought in was useful in some way or the other such as the hat on my first contact sheet was in the correct time era for our film noir project. The equipment was a hassle to set up but when i got it sorted the rest of it was a breeze such as setting the ISO, i had this on a low setting since it was the morning and the was enough light within the tunnel to justify not having a high ISO.

For starters i had desaturated the image and then changed the the hue/saturation of the image to make it look like there are lots of shadows and it being dark but then it was too dark so i adjusted the exposure to show the actual model without having to manual chancing the brightness on a computer monitor.That was my first image for my second image i did the exact same thing however before i did it id cut out the actor in this image. my third one was the product shot and since i had already edited it in the same way as the other two but since it was on a seamless background i could just use the Quick select tool to quickly cut it out. My Final one was of the window within the classroom so i did the the same as stated before to make it look shadowy and dark then i cut the panes of glass out of the window to so that i could be seen as a backdoor or a jail cell.

The images only match up with design brief in the way of a single man standing in front of a bland image however i couldn't get the right props in since i needed some type of heavy machinery to create wind i would also need a metal case of some kind for the actor to hold. the things i would improve would be the setting because if i did in the TV studio within college the image of the actor would have cam out with a better quality.

Research into Film Noir

In film noir there is an important set up for the lights called the 'Three Point Lighting'.This set up is mainly used for the face. The lights for this type of set up are the Key light, this light is the strongest of the three lights then the next would be the Fill light this is mainly used for filling the shadows that are left by the Key light and the final light of the set up would be Back light  this is used to define the object of interest from the background. Of  these lights there are more types of lighting for different things and one of these is a style called 'Low key lighting' or 'Chiaroscuro' this style is basically for directors who have a low budget so they can't afford enough lights for the film, this style emphasizes shadows and hard lighting to create a sense of volume and depth, it can be originally found in paintings. This was mainly used during the 1940's - 1959 this can be called the classical era of film noir.

Since in film noir lighting is important there is a technique 'Cucoloris'  or cookies this is where a piece of cardboard or plywood and you have to put it in front of the light and then it creates and object such as blinds for windows.

Proposal

Proposal (Film Noir)

In this film noir project I am going recreate an image within the film noir genre to do this I will have to use a Lumix camera from college so that I can take images of my props and images of the surrounding area such as the front of the building and the many hallways within the building. I will have 5 shots that are tilted, 5 portrait, and 10 landscape. These will be my test shots for my two final images. After I have taken these images I will compile all of the images into two contact sheets then I will chose which one I will use. The image that I am probably going to inmate would be the poster for the ‘Third Son’ because I would not need all three lights for it. The risks to this project would be as followed; we would need permission for taking images in case we were on private property or else we would get ether thrown out or a law suit, another risk would be theft because once we go into town we would be on our own and we would be susceptible to theft. Then the next risk would people in general because if you say a certain word you could set them off and finally would be accidents because of the tripod since its legs stick out a far so it can be classed as a tripping hazard.

For my first image I will have some one model for me so that I can recreate the ‘third son’ poster I will produce this through a combination of Photoshop and lights. My Secondary image would be of an alcoholic person or a fight between two people. My third picture would be of a man reading a newspaper and finally a mixture of glass and alcohol bottles.

the first difficulty would be the lighting since film noir is heavy on shadow, we would need to be in a very dark or in a low light area since we need at least three lights. The next problem would be setting the ISO so the higher it is there is a grain effect on the image, wide aperture to allow more light into the lens. finally the shutter speed for a high shutter speed.

What I Liked about it:  I liked it because it was made of basic items that can be found around the house such as the Jack Daniels, the glass, ash tray, cigarette and the fedora. The gun can just be a plastic look alike.

 How am I going to recreate it? I am going to recreate this by setting up a black screen less background then I am going to set the glass and bottle next to each other. Then I’m going to add different Item around them. Also I will have a key light in front of the objects so it can all be lighted without any shadows that are casted on the other objects.

What I liked about it: I liked the isolation that is within the image and I can use it for the background for my final image and I can find a place where I can take an image just like this.

How am I going to recreate this image? By going out early in morning and heading to a main road and taking an image of the road lights. Since there is a lot of condensation in the morning so I could get the same effect as this image.

What I like about it: I liked how the shadows emit off the stair case that leaves an empty area where a window could go.

How can I recreate it? I can recreate this by taking an image of any stair case then edit it in Photoshop. I will have two different key lights, one for the stairs to project the hard shadow and the other on the actor to try and project a soft shadow

What I like about:  Its only one subject of interest in this image so that I can have more focus on the light and not on if there will be any distraction for the other models etc. 

How can I recreate it? I can recreate this image by borrowing a fedora from a friend and have my key light on the left side of his face and an eye light on the models face since the flame will be the filament light since it’s close to the face.

What I like about it: I liked the positioning of the model with its surrounding and his face covered in smoke

How can I recreate it? I would need a smoke machine for the smoke and an actor with a suit and tie. i would also need a key light and a hair light

Generic Conventions (Film Noir)

On the Left there are notes that i have taken after watching the movie 'This Gun for Hire'.






One of the generic concepts that are in the film noir genre, would be the amount of shadows within the movie for example the objects within the movie would have a hard shadow in contrast to the soft shadows castes by the actors.

Another generic concept would be the acceptably of hitting women in every day life. This is because the time period where the movie took place was '1942'. The next generic

The next thing we did in this lesson was to find out the generic ideas in film noir by making a list with either generic or non-generic we did this by getting a A3  sheet then divided it in to two sections for sorting the small rectangular pieces of paper. For example one of the rectangular pieces of paper has something on it saying 'Lots of blood and gore' this isn't generic because people weren't adjusted to violence, while on other other hand 'Dark shadows' were really common.
